Frequently asked questions

Can oysters only be eaten in the months ending in "ber?"

Our farm raised oysters can be enjoyed year-round. Because our oysters are a hybrid oyster, they do not spawn (or reproduce) so instead of spending the summer reproducing they spend all their time growing. LSOC follows stringent rules regarding time and temperature according to DMF regulations.

What is your favorite way to eat an oyster?

Any way at all! If I had to make a choice, my first choice would be raw, second would be Rockefeller and third would be fried.

Why are oysters good for the environment?

Oysters are a unique species in that one adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day and they remove algae and pollutants from our estuaries.

Are raw oysters safe to eat?

Yes, raw oysters are safe to eat. There is always a risk involved when eating "raw" seafood for those who are immune compromised. The Consumer Advisory states: "Eating raw, or undercooked oysters, clams or mussels may cause severe illness. People with the following conditions are at especially high risk: liver disease, alcoholism, diabetes, cancer, stomach or blood disorder, or weakened immune system. Ask your doctor if you are unsure of your risk. If you eat raw, undercooked shellfish and become sick, see a doctor immediately."

*The above Consumer Advisory is from the NC Department of Environmental Quality Division of Marine Fisheries*

Do you cater?

We do have steamers and shuckers available and we are always happy to be invited to events to help make your time at your event more enjoyable!

I see that you sell 100 count bags, can I get less than that amount?

Our rates are based on a 100 count bag picked up at our dock but can be customized to any size and delivery area.

Do you deliver?

Yes, we deliver!

How many oysters do you have in the water?

We have approximately two million oysters growing on our lease in the Pamlico Sound.
